Libraries

The bottom line is that our libraries need more support from county government. I think most citizens realize what a fabulous public service the library is; what they may not know is what a stellar national reputation our local library has. It is amazing that they have been able to archive so much with so little - it is a testament to our Director, and to our hard-working librarians. It also makes me wonder how much more they could accomplish for the citizens of Knox County if they were given the support and status they deserve in our county government. Our public libraries are something we should be proud of, and they deserve more recognition than they currently receive.

Our library is the Public's University; it is a place that nurtures creativity, enlightenment, art, culture, and understanding. It is a lifelong learning center, and a critical part of our educational system. It is the primary library for Pellissippi State Technical Community College and Knoxville College, and the secondary library for the University of Tennessee. Over 1400 people visit the downtown library every day, and it sends out over 70,000 materials every month in inter-library loan.

Unfortunately, due to budget cuts our library system was forced to cut periodicals in all the branches. It also has had its budget for acquiring new materials cut to almost 25% of what is should be. Some branches may eventually be closed. This highlights how important it is to have people in office who can make wise spending decisions, and create a budget that supports one of the most popular public services in the county.

As Commissioner, I will push for the funding that our library system both needs and deserves.
