More About Amy
Amy is an avid hiker and loves to go camping with family and friends. She also enjoys kayaking, canoeing, caving and rock climbing, although these days she mostly climbs playground equipment and gets wet in wading pools!
In her younger days, Amy spent 3 years driving around the United States with her two dogs, camping at National and State Parks along the way. "It was an amazing experience to see our country and to make friends in big cities and rural towns all over America. I even visited Amy, Kansas!"
It was the impact of this journey that made Amy decide that Knoxville was where she wanted to spend the rest of her life. "I have traveled all over the United States, and I haven't found a better place to live than Knox County, Tennessee. I love this area - the mountains, rivers, and forests are great for recreation and contemplation, and I have been impressed with the resilience, persistence, generosity and character of the folks in this region. I am proud to have been born and raised in East Tennessee, and to call Knoxville home."
In Junior High and High School, Amy played woodwind instruments - clarinet, flute, oboe and bassoon. As an adult Amy has taken lessons on guitar and violin, although she says she "really stinks on strings!" Music remains important to her, and she enjoys attending the musical events of our local schools. One reason she loves her neighborhood is because "in the fall, we can sit on our front porch and hear the Fulton High School Marching Band rehearse!"
Amy was one of the first participants in the University of Tennessee's Conflict Resolution Training Program. This experience should come in handy on the County Commission.
Amy is a fan of several sports, and rarely misses a UT football game. She also roots for the Tennessee Titans - except when they play the Indianapolis Colts. She is also a big fan of John Smoltz, who pitches for the Atlanta Braves.
In college, Amy was a member of the UT Fencing Team, where she earned the "Most Improved Fencer" award one year. "I think they gave it to me because of my enthusiasm for the sport, not because of any increase in my level of skill!" She still enjoys fencing and works out as often as she can with her husband, who is also a fan of the sport. This may also come in handy on the County Commission.
Amy and her husband are raising three beautiful girls together. Jamie's daughter Amira, who is 15, is in high school, and is a student of art and music. Their daughter Aidyn, who is 6, is in the first grade in the magnet program at Beaumont. She is an exuberant child who has never met a stranger. Avery, the baby at 19 months, keeps her parents on their toes by climbing on top of desks, tables, and shelves, and by hiding all the phones in the house. Her favorite words are "mine" and "wow." She attends Mother's Day Out at Washington Pike United Methodist Church.
