Safe Neighborhoods
As a local business owner and the mother of three girls, a safe community is a high priority for me.
Neighborhood Watch is a fabulous vehicle for involving the community in keeping crime under control. It is also a great way to foster community relationships and stability. Neighborhood Watch works best when multiple neighborhoods are involved. As the Neighborhood Watch signs go up, crime moves on - often into the next neighborhood. Having a Neighborhood Watch network across the entire district will give criminals a loud and clear signal that they are not welcome here! As commissioner, I will continue to promote Neighborhood Watch throughout our district.
Traffic Calming also has a positive impact on the safety of our neighborhoods. Devices such as speed humps, raised intersections, and traffic circles encourage drivers to travel at slower speeds, and also discourage "cut-though" traffic. I believe the traffic calming process in our neighborhood has been successful, not only by calming traffic, but also by building community during the process. It can probably do the same for your neighborhood! As commissioner, I will actively work with neighborhoods and streets that want to pursue Traffic Calming.
Another way to promote a safe neighborhood is by making certain our kids have somewhere to go and something to do after school. As commissioner, I will encourage and support after-school programs in our schools and at other facilities such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, YOKE, and the Emerald Youth Foundation. I also support the skate park that is being developed in Fountain City, as well as the creation of other opportunities for healthy recreation for our kids.
I am especially concerned about our children’s safety while on the Internet, and I am a member of the National Association to Protect Children (link), a nonpartisan, pro-child, anti-crime organization that fights against child pornography and child predators on the Internet. As Commissioner, I will push for Internet safety to be a priority with our local law enforcement, and will encourage school and community programs that teach our children how to use the Internet safely.
