Seniors and Veterans
Our senior citizens are one of our community's most precious resources. We need to take advantage of their life experience and good sense by including them more fully in our community life.
As I have been volunteering in our district's schools, I have been talking with teachers about what they need most. Every single one of them indicated a need for a classroom assistant. With three senior residences in our district, it seems to me that we have an untapped pool of school volunteers. It would be wonderful to create a program to match seniors with students to improve our schools.
I am glad to see so many new senior centers in our county; however, the senior center in District 2 is cramped and outdated. Our seniors deserve better! I also think that Guy B. Love Towers need renovation. As commissioner, I would work to secure funding for these important projects.
As a volunteer with Mobile Meals, I interact with some of our district's most needy and/or ill seniors. I would work to find creative ways to improve the lives of these citizens. Produce from community gardens could be shared, and visitation programs could be established.
Our seniors also have special health concerns that could be partially addressed by our communities. Seniors are more likely to develop conditions requiring a transfusion, but are also most likely to be rejected as donors, preventing them from receiving free blood products in exchange for a yearly donation at Medic. As commissioner, I would work to develop a volunteer program of donating extra "credits" at Medic Regional Blood Center to an elder in your neighborhood.
It has also been my pleasure to spend some time with Chuck Jones in the Veteran's Services Department. I am completely impressed by the number of veterans he helps on a yearly basis, and how much effort and dedication he brings to his work. I was honored to be invited to participate in this year's Stand Down for Homeless Veterans in October. It goes without saying that this program must remain fully funded.
